"'Vitamin O,' the Stabilized Oxygen Solution," reads the website banner.
The 15$, 2 fl.oz. bottle apparently contains enough oxygen to supplement the normal prevalence of oxygen in the body. The site emphasizes the fact that the oxygen present in Vitamin O solution is actually molecularly stabilized. One can only fathom what stabilized molecules really are; however, the thought that Americans will blatantly use the "facts" presented on the site to validate their purchases of Vitamin O, is frightening. Another "fact" that is somewhat disturbing-as a result of its obvious vacuity-is the claim that the normal human is suffering from oxygen deficiency. Apparently, digestion and cellular respiration and hormone production all contribute to this oxygen deficiency. This is not just an exaggerated fact, but a clear fallacy. The body's oxygen supply is constantly being replenished; cellular respiration, digestion, and hormone production are ongoing processes that do not significantly affect the body's net oxygen content. The thought that marketers are using the uninformed American public so blatantly is disturbing; often times, marketing schemes are based on rough scientific data-here, the manufacturers of Vitamin O have not supported their claims with any true scientific data. Furthermore, the apparent success of Vitamin O is reason for alarm. While a 2 oz bottle costs 15-20 dollars, demand for Vitamin O must be high. Vitamin O is possible the idealized example of the misuse of science for monetary and other benefits that Schwarcz thoroughly explains in his book The Fly in the Ointment.

Oxygen Therapy (The Other Side) –Sachin Shukla

Ed McCabe, a man who writes for the sole purpose of glorifying oxygen, published a best selling book in 1988 titled, Oxygen Therapies, A New Way of Approaching Disease. Since then, over 250,000 copies have been sold and he has appeared on over 1500 television interviews as well as given lectures. It seems people are buying into what he has to say.
Mr. McCabe states generally in his book that because of the history of bad environmental choices man has made in the development of the world, the rising pollution presents a marked problem for humans’ health and oxygen supply. In addition, he states that much of the mass processed food lacks natural oxygen which are “mega-farmed” and “de-mineralized.” He continues on to state that over time, humans will gradually lower their intake of oxygen, seen on the cellular level. “Dirty” blood cells are starting to contaminate the blood stream even today, and thus more and more germs, bacteria, and fungi are entering the body.
A recent publication, Flood Your Body with Oxygen, states that flooding the body with oxygen refills the bloodstream with natural oxygen. This in turn recreates an environment inhabitable to bacteria infested blood cells. McCabe states that this practice has been used by doctors across the world, though not mainly in the United States, for more than 50 years. Flood Your Body with Oxygen is said to be the best Oxygen book in history.

History of Oxygen – Sachin Shukla

Oxygen is abundant, massively important, and extremely useful in the lives of organisms around the world. Yet, how many humans actually know the history of the giver of life-oxygen?
Oxygen had first been produced in around 1774 but was not recognized by the scientists who produced it as a side product. Later, Joseph Priestly and Carl Wilhelm Scheele independently discovered oxygen; however, Priestly commonly received the most credit for the discovery. Their reactions involved the heating of HgO (mercuric oxide), but both gave the gas a different name. Priestly and Scheele gave oxygen its original name of “dephlogisticated air” and “fire air,” respectively. Oxygen was then given its traditional name of “Oxygen” by Antoine Lavoisier.
As for its chemical properties and abundance, oxygen is highly combustible. It also makes up half of the mass of the earth’s crust and two-thirds of the human body. In addition, it makes up around 21% of the earth’s atmosphere, making it the 3rd most abundant element in the universe. The ozone (O3) makes up the earth’s ozone layer which protects the earth from the sun.
However, do these imporant facts and history support the emergence of numerous Oxygen bars? That is a question for society to decide.

Oxygen Bar arrives in Small-town America - Skagit Valley "Relaxation Station"-Sharon Park

A new business in downtown Mount Vernon, called the Relaxation Station, serves a breath of fresh air, even including flavored oxygen, for those who feel “stressed out” and for those who “need to take a break”. Comparing oxygen bars to cosmetic companies, FDA confirms that bars cannot really make claims about improving anyone’s health. Unfortunately, there are people who just do not listen.
Allison Morelan, the shop owner of the Relaxation Station makes such claims as boosting up energy and clearing one’s head, despite the FDA. Her business, which opened in February, includes “individual oxygen booths where customers can rest in a relaxation chair and breath 97 % pure oxygen while watching scenic videos…” (as shown in the picture below).

These bars are not only luring in people who seek to find a place to rest, but are also encouraging women to come to bars as a place to spend time with others. To induce these social people even more, Morelan plans to book private after-hour parties that offer unlimited oxygen and massage time after a certain time.

True, Morelan’s ideas seem plausible and business-efficient, yet her claims of relaxation due to inhalation of oxygen cannot be proven, thus, making her statements unacceptable and misleading.

The Truth About Oxygen Bars-Sharon Park

Oxygen bars increase their popularity among urban hipsters and major cities through their claims of relaxation and invigorations, but what is the reason people go to these useless bars?
Simply, oxygen served at bars are filtered through a concentrator machine, leaving the nitrogen and other atmospheric gases to produce oxygen that is 95% pure. Scented oxygen is just the filtered oxygen put into bottles with aromatic solutions.
Offering purified, often scented, oxygen through a nasal hose, the bar also includes an atmosphere that is usually relaxed and complete with soothing background music, attracting people who seek a comfortable place to relax. Some nightclubs even offer flavored oxygen for worn out dancers. A session usually lasts from five to twenty minutes, costing one dollar per minute. To increase profit, many bars offer other services as massages, healthy food, and energy drinks.
While some people claim to feel permanent effects of reduced stress, increased energy, increased alertness, and alleviation of symptoms of hangovers, others say they feel no different than before. To confirm the futility of these bars, Julian Marcus in his article The Truth About Oxygen Bars notes that “scientific data says that purified oxygen does very little, as our blood is already saturated with 99% oxygen”.
To conclude, George Boyer, MD, chief of pulmonary and critical care quotes, “If your lungs are healthy, and you have no breathing difficulties, your body has all the oxygen it needs. Taking in more is like going to the gas station and trying to fill a tank that’s already filled.”

The Oxygen Bar Experience-Sourav Bose

Upon entering an oxygen bar, the first detail one notices is the array of oxygen tanks filled with colorful liquids. From these tanks extend long tubes which end in disposable nosepieces called cannulas. During the 20 minute experience, pure oxygen rises through the tube and mixes with air from the surroundings; by the time the oxygen reaches the nose, it is in a mixture with a 50% concentration. This in itself defeats the purpose of the oxygen bar. Despite researchers' attributing the placebo effect to many users' claims of improved health and feeling from the use of oxygen, other clients have established that this is actually not true and that oxygen bars actually promote the citizens' escape from polluted and smoggy city life. Despite these claims, oxygen bars are simply a marketing scheme. The same users that have claimed benefits as a result of the oxygen treatments also established that oxygen bars are cheap to open and run and are profitable; they are a novelty that draws attention from the uninformed public. Despite the obvious uselessness of oxygen bars, the public has been keen enough to point out one major benefit. With the increased popularity of oxygen bars, society can hope for a drop in clientele of alcoholic bars. Every 20 minutes spent in an oxygen bar is 20 minutes not spent on smoking or drinking. Perhaps with proper promotion, oxygen bars can become a relatively harmless pastime that will serve as a substitute for current behaviors which often have dangerous or harmful results. In other words, oxygen bars have the potential to gain the popularity which will decrease the use of standard alcoholic bars, possibly leading to a decrease in, for example, automobile accidents, rape, and other behaviors associated with altered judgment.

Oxygenated Beverages Anyone? -Sachin Shukla

Oxygenated beverages are served at Oxygen Bars, such as the O2 Spa Bar in Toronto. Yet, what exactly do these beverages entail? Oxygenated beverages contain just that – oxygen. However, consumers drink oxygenated beverages without even having to go to an oxygen bar. One such example is oxygenated water.

Similar to how carbonated beverages contain and are pressurized with carbon dioxide, oxygenated beverages are dissolved with oxygen. Oxygen Water Aqua Stores explains the beverage. The oxygen is released as the beverage is consumed and spreads into the blood cells efficiently. One striking difference, however, is that while carbon dioxide steadily leaves the carbonated beverage, oxygen will remain in the beverage for a long period of time. One benefit to oxygenated beverages is that, “[the beverage] contains oxygen in a concentration sufficient to provide significant physical energy boosts for the athlete while reducing pulse rates by 5-15 beats per minute; a shocking increase in mental acuity and clarity.”

Because of this high concentration of Oxygen, only a small amount of the beverage needs to be consumed for the above effect to take place. Thus, oxygen bars always have a surplus of beverages.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://knights-alchemy.blogspot.com/2005/11/oxygenated-beverages-anyone-sachin.html' title='Oxygenated Beverages Anyone? Company owners say that “seven years of experience and patented designs have separated” them from other O2 Bar Manufactures and Oxygen Bar Rental companies. How? No details could actually be found. Instead, they follow the footsteps taken by various nightclubs, spas, restaurants, coffee houses, bars, airports, ski chalets and caterers to enter the business and make some money of their own. Airheads even includes a video clip of actual, happy customers utilizing the oxygen bars in bars (to view, click here). They sell nose hoses (nasal cannulas) as low as .29 cents per oxygen pop, with free shipping.
As noted, the Airheads claim that “athletes agree oxygen increases their performance, endurance, and energy level” since they need great amounts of oxygen to “convert carbohydrates, sugars, fats, and proteins into energy”. By adding a list of how deficiency in oxygen may cause weight gain, sexual dysfunction, cancer and disease, fatigue, depression, etc., the manufacturer comforts many who can relate to these symptoms of lack of oxygen, thus promoting oxygen bars. An entire list of testimonials have also been incorporated into the official website on how oxygen improved the lives of many.
Unlike the concerns that the oils for aroma may harm the lungs, Airheads uses essential oils, selected from many regions around the world that have been tested for oxygen inhalation safety. Yes, Airheads's oxygen may be safe and make people feel healthier, but what is the point if it offers no benefits?

Maximizing Profit: How Oxygen Bars Do It -Sachin Shukla

Oxygen Bars open up all around the country these days. Airports, malls, and sports clinics are now assimilating O2 bars into their shops and making them a commodity. But many consumers as well as scientists still strain to see the light behind the veil. How are oxygen bars so appealing to clinics and commercial centers?

The Oxygen Expierience, a natural high, reveals why oxygen bars are so successful and can maximize profit for any sports clinic, mall, and airport. This company boasts having a client “by the nose” for 10-20 minutes while they drink up oxygen. At 1 dollar per minute, 10-20 minutes can be quite the sum of money for a local sports clinic or a side airport or mall kiosk. They also boast on how as long as the equipment is functioning, the profits will just ease into the clinic or kiosk. The equipment they claim to use is disposable and non-toxic, thus leaving the customer satisfied with the hygiene.

Therefore, it seems as though this is all in the money. The profits supposed by the Oxygen Experience as well as the recent uprisings of many O2 bars around the country all point to the disappointing fact that people these days are too gullible. They will try anything to make money.

Oxygen Bars Do Not End the Story: O3 Therapy -Sourav Bose

In previous blogs it was seen that oxygen bars have been popping up around the nation everywhere from airports to mall kiosks to spas and general bars. While the dangers of this mode of oxygen intake have been discussed, the problem actually lies on a larger scale of oxygen therapy. In fact, only one mode of oxygen therapy, Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy, has been proven effective. The first of these is ozone therapy. Ozone is claimed to ensure higher oxygen levels in the blood as a result of the presence of one extra oxygen atom. However, it has been proven that exposure to O3 can irritate body orifices, cause headaches, coughs, and aggravate the respiratory system. In higher concentrations, O3 can even be deadly, leading to sure death. According to Gail Attara, Director of the Northwestern Society of Intestinal Research "it can be fatal when inhaled directly" leading to other modes of administration "that avoid inhalation" O3 is administered in several ways, including ingestion of a solution of dissolved ozone, application of an oil mixture to the skin, the drawing and reinjection of blood that is mixed with ozone, as well as the blowing of O3 into body cavities. These methods even further the dangerous effects of O3 exposure. Injection of O3 leads to the possibility of embolism, poor circulation, fainting, coughing, and a host of other dangerous side effects. When applied rectally or vaginally, O3 can irritate and dry tissue and lead to inflammation. Clearly, while the dangers of oxygen bars are of concern, those of therapies such as ozone administration are cause for even more concern.

ZO2NE : The Oxygen Spa Equipment – Sharon Park

Numerous oxygen bars have recently been planted across America, Europe, and Asia to promote health. The bar owners quote many people in order to advertise oxygen. For example, one owner quoted professional athletes who inhaled oxygen before participating in competitions, people experienced miraculous recoveries from allergies or hangovers, and those who witnessed delays in the aging process. However, it seems that these Oxygen bars were not enough to satiate users and a new method has been developed to get people to ingest more oxygen: private oxygen bars like "The ZO2NE : The Portable Oxygen Bar."
This new easy-to-assemble bar was invented to allow oxygen to be readily available for casual users in any health spa environment. The ZO2NE is a “low-cost-easy-to-install oxygen enriched air system … [which] features the latest O2 generators which produce 90% to 94% concentration of O2 plus the latest Aromatherapy system featuring essential oils from all over the world steam distilled for purity and safety”.
The ZO2NE producers claim that healthy people can “improve their vitality by inhaling oxygen.” However, as seen previously, scientists clearly refute their claims by saying “it is difficult to say that there are any benefits from breathing more oxygen.”

The Dangers of High Intake O2-Sourav Bose

Based on experiments by Dr. Joshua P. Fessel MD/Ph.D. and Dr. L. Jackson Roberts II, professor of Pharmacology and Medicine at Vanderbilt University, a certain category of compounds called isofurans form when cell membrane lipids are attacked by other molecules. The production of these compounds is expedited in the presence of oxygen. These scientists have found that increased presence of oxygen in inhaled air over a period of three hours can work to cause hyperoxia-induced lung injury. This is a condition that is known to occur in patients in intensive care units; thus, those patients are only allowed 2-3 hours of 60% oxygen. Furthermore, the doctors have found that a certain trigger is released, after a certain time, that activates apoptosis of lung cells. This condition would obviously not affect a standard oxygen bar customer; however, they ask, "what about the person who has some underlying infection or other problem in the lung?" While these scientists have not directly approached the issue of oxygen bars, from their report it is clear that increased oxygen intake for some people can be extremely harmful. In addition to the lipid induced pneumonia mentioned several posts ago, hyperoxia-induced lung injury is a reason that people should be wary of fads like oxygen bars. In attempting to provide something beneficial to their bodies, customers are actually putting themselves at risk.

The New Thing-Oxygen Bars- Sharon Park

(go to this article)

In his article Jim Hightower has said, “… I’ve never been in a place like the O2 Spa Bar in Toronto, Canada. This is a bar where … patrons come to consume nothing but oxygen. Yes, air. And they charge you for it. This latest bar fad has been all the rage for some time in Japan and Europe, and now it is loose on our continent., poised perilously close to our own nation’s border.”
Doing anthropological research in many bars, Mr. Hightower admits going to many bars and pubs, but out of all the bars he went to, he recalls that he never went to a place like the O2 Spa Bar in Canada. As observed, the process of selling an ‘oxygen pop’ works just like selling alcohol in any bar, except alcohol is replaced by a small plastic tube running from an oxygen canister. This tube has prongs that the person hooks into his/her nostrils. And then? The customer breathes.
Lissa Charon, the co-owner of the O2 bar, says that these specific Oxygen bars are the new ‘90s alternative’, allowing people to feel energized and alert.
Being the party poopers they are, doctors from the American Lung Association counterarguments Ms. Charon’s claim, by saying that it’s very “hard to substantiate what the benefits could be.” Considering that the owners of the oxy-bars receive $16 for a twenty-minute pop of pure oxygen, it is quite reasonable why the owners would make such claims of feeling energized and alert.

Marginal O2: The Benefit -Sachin Shukla

Many people have been skeptical about the Oxygen Bars and what they provide – extra oxygen. But while the extra oxygen may not be worth the cost and time of sitting in a bar, there surely is a purpose for extra oxygen.

Extra oxygen would serve most useful when used to treat lung diseases and heart diseases. Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, or BPD, for example, is a lung disease which occurs in premature infants during the first months of their development. This disease causes an abnormality of pressure which is related to the amount of oxygen pumped through the body. This disease causes the baby to breathe more rapidly than normal, and thus the oxygen is used up fairly quickly. Therefore, more oxygen must be administered.

Of course, not all the customers who visit oxygen bars in search for more oxygen have BPD or are premature infants. There are certain types of heart diseases as well in adults, such as Coronary Artery Disease, which mimic the effect of climbing to high altitudes. “When the external oxygen pressure is low, such as at a high altitude, hemoglobin saturation is not achieved and breathing extra oxygen can help” (Shwarcz, 285). In this case as well, more oxygen needs to be administered to treat the disease.

Now although more O2 can serve an important purpose, it is doubtful that patients with the above diseases will visit an O2 bar for treatment instead of say, a trained, certified doctor.

Pollution vs. Oxygen Levels-Sachin Shukla

How exactly has the O2 Spa Bar in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Toronto, Canada been able to attract customers? Actually, it is not what the O2 Spa Bar is doing and enticingly advertising, but more of what consumers are naively thinking that makes them want to “dine” at the oxygen bar.

Air Pollution, as it steadily climbs in all cities and suburban areas across the world, has an obvious, tremendous impact on the way we live and how we must prepare for the future. Might receiving a dose of oxygen be a preventive, logical step to remedy a possible oxygen decline because of the rising pollution?

The fact is, though air pollution is rising around the world drastically, in no way does it decrease or affect the amount of oxygen humans are exposed to, that is, the oxygen in the air. Dr. Joe Shwarcz states, “The bulk of our oxygen supply is produced by algae in the oceans, not trees in the Amazon” (283). Of course, this does not mean that water pollution does not affect the amount of oxygen we are exposed to.

A process known as eutrophication will have the final say in oxygen depletion. This process provides a gradual increase of nitrogen and phosphorus in rivers, lakes, and eventually oceans. The process results in a change in species composition. Some aquatic species are able to ascend the food chain and dominate other species which are negatively affected by the rise in phosphorus and nitrogen levels. In humans, this causes dramatic changes, as the process can lead to lower levels of dissolved oxygen in the ocean. In some extreme cases, toxins can be produced by Clostridium botulinum. <?xml:namespace prefix = o />

In the end, though water pollution may pose a strong threat to oxygen in the future, this does not advocate running to oxygen bars for a “shot” every day.

Club Paradise-An Oxygen Bar and Tanning Salon-Sourav Bose

It seems that oxygen bars are a novelty in many areas where prices for 20 minutes of oxygen are $2.50. In Jacksonville, Alabama, Club Paradise, an oxygen bar and tanning salon is a popular residential hangout. According to owner, Jack Strother, he has had “whole families come in; the momma, daddy, and the kids.” It is even more intriguing that some of his clients have claimed addictions to the flavored oxygen that he dispenses. Clients come in as many times as 3 or 4 times a week to breathe his oxygen. Jan Barnwell, a bar regular claims that the oxygen helps with the tanning process. This agrees with Strother’s claim that increased oxygen increases melanin proliferation in the skin. Customers like Barnwell also enjoy his bar for the clean and censored atmosphere. Whether or not the oxygen works, the atmosphere of these bars is fashionable and exotic-one drawing point for a customer base. It is not only a business however, but also a method to enhance a job. In another city, Scottsdale, Arizona, the CEO of an advertising firm installed an oxygen bar in her building so that “employees can…energize and revitalize themselves.” According to her, the oxygen that her employees breathe fosters efficiency and productivity. Whether there is any truth to the oxygen claims, it is clear that these bars are popular both in populated and less populated areas.

Oxygen Bars Not a Breath of Fresh Air-Sourav Bose

For $1/minute, customers can inhale 94% oxygen at designated oxygen bars, nightclubs, and health spas. Within a decade of their introduction in the United States, these bars have gained popularity that is based on pure balderdash. It seems that although there are no studies demonstrating the health benefits of oxygen bars, there is evidence that if too much oxygen is administered, especially for those with medical problems, oxygen can have detrimental effects on the body. Even worse are the flavored varieties of oxygen- bars include fat-based scents in their 94% oxygen-which can lead to even more problems such as lipoid pneumonia of the lungs where the lipids in the oxygen can attach to the walls of the lungs. Experts like Dr. Norman Edelman from the American Lung Association and Stony Brook University state that “based on our understanding of the science, it's very hard to believe that the oxygen used in oxygen bars can be of any benefit.” Oxygen bar owners deny the claims of medical experts. Lisa Hinchey, owner of the 2202 Oxygen Bar and Organic Café in San Francisco claims that “Doctors don't want you to do it because it takes money away from them. It detoxifies your blood cells, it gives you more stamina, it gives you pure, fresh energy, not like caffeine energy.” Clearly, however, it is the experts that should be trusted rather than entrepreneurs like Hinchey.

Oxygen Bars: Is a Breath of Fresh Air Worth It?-Sharon Park

A lot of us enjoy peppermints, cranberries, and wintergreen, thinking they’re candies, not knowing that they are oxygen that were ‘flavored. Recently, the United States began to frantically sniffing oxygen through a plastic hose, called the cannula, which is inserted into the nostrils. The bar owners claim that oxygen is not a medical gas, but instead, used for recreational use. However, the FDA has made it clear that it is still being used as a prescription drug. Many states are looking to allow oxygen bars, because of such claims as curing cancer or AIDS, reducing stress, increasing energy and alertness, and alleviating arthritis pain. However, the American Lung Association says that inhaling oxygen at oxygen bars is unlikely to have any beneficial physiological effect. Purucker says, “People think oxygen is good, but more is not necessarily better.” Additionally, for those with select medical conditions, overdose of oxygen can even cause them to die.

https://webmail.bergen.org/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/2002/602_air.html

Cellfood: The Meal Accompanying the Oxygen Bar-Sharon Park

Everyone knows food is essential to one’s survival, but the scientists have gone one step further by creating Cellfood, a high-performance oxygen and hydrogen based consumer health product. Scientists have figured that most diseases and infections are caused by oxygen starvation at the cellular level, whereas the Cellfood provides the oxygen source to the body at the cellular level, along with increasing metabolism, encouragement of more consumption of vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other nutrients, and also the permission of the body to function cleanly and efficiently.
Now, the questions waits: how does Cellfood work? It dissociates the water molecule into hydrogen and oxygen by shifting and weakening the bonding electrons. The conclusive result is the release of oxygen.

True, this invention may help increase the consumption of oxygen and all the things it promised to do, but according to Dr. Joe Schwarz who thoroughly researched this area, extra consumption of oxygen does not really aid the human body.

https://webmail.bergen.org/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.nuscience.com/cellfood.htm

The Bars Which Don’t Recommend a Designated Driver-Sachin Shukla

Most bars let you acquire a fine taste for liquor and alcohol, letting you relax amidst many, if not all, of the bars heavily intoxicated patrons. Yet, all the while, a different kind of bar allows you do the exact same thing, with only one discrepancy: Oxygen.

The O2 Spa Bar in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Toronto, Canada, allows its patrons become intimately oxygenated. The procedure involves a little more, however, than just an amiable nod to the bartender for a shot.

Oxygen bars like the one in Toronto, Canada, attempt to increase energy and stamina, rejuvenate cells and delay cell aging, increase mental alertness, deter fat, relieve migraines and hangovers, strengthen the immune system against viruses, and reduce environmental toxins in the body. (Schwarcz, 282). A plastic tube prods up the patron’s nose while a button on a control panel regulates the flow of the oxygen into the body. And this kind of shot is only a mere 16 dollars per 20 minutes of oxygenation.

How effective is this treatment?
